Larkspur (Consolida ajacis) is a beautiful Summer flowers. It belongs to the buttercup family and very often is called an annual Delphinium. And it's not surprising. These closely related cousins from Ranunculaceae family look nearly identical, growing delicate little blooms on showy, spiked stems that are adorned by lacy foliage. It takes 80-90 days for Larkspur to bloom from germination (about 110-120 from sowing seed). It is a cold-hardy plant that needs cold stratification to grow properly. The best result we’ve got from the direct sown into the growing beds. You can sow larkspur in Fall time (October-November) straight into the ground or early Spring (end February-March). Larkspur prefers to be direct sown since it doesn’t love being transplanted. Direct-sown plants tend to be more robust.
Without the proper vernalization period, the plants may result in stunted growth and therefore, short stems. Larkspur is a one-cut crop, meaning it does not produce new stems like snapdragons or cosmos do. The upside is that the plant sends out multiple stems that allow you to harvest from them for several weeks as they bloom. The number of flowers is so high! After sowing they create a lot of seeds that self-seed and grow on this place next year.
It is a very good cut flowers and so good for drying! One of our favorite flowers for Summer and Winter bouquets! There are 70 seeds in package. Annual.
